Departamento de Política Científica e Tecnológica - DPCT
The Department of Science and Technology Policy (DPCT) was created at the Institute of Geosciences in 1985, followed by its foundation as a Research Center (in 1981). The Department was created by Professor Amílcar Herrera, also founder of the Institute, with the initial purpose of developing research on topics related to Science and Technology Policies, having been a pioneer in these studies in Brazil and Latin America. The DPCT starts from the view that the evolution of Science and Technology is a social process and, as such, conditioned by factors of a political, economic and cultural nature. Thus, the Department has been marked since its inception by multi- and interdisciplinarity, both in its teaching staff and in the lines of research it develops. The research we currently carry out (at undergraduate and graduate levels) relates to two major areas of scientific and technological policy: innovation studies and social studies of science and technology. Since its foundation, DPCT has projected itself as one of the main research centers in this field in Latin America.
DPCT's pioneering spirit was also reflected in the creation of its Graduate Programme in Science and Technology Policy (PPG-PCT), the first in the country and in Latin America. Initially with the Master's course - created in 1988, the department soon created the Doctorate course in 1995. Like the Department, the PPG-PCT has been interdisciplinary since its inception, which is reflected in its lines of research:
- History and Theories of Science and Technology;
- Science and Technology in the Development Process;
- Science and Technology Strategies and Social Actors;
- Science and Technology Strategies and Social Actors;
- Management of Science, Technology and Innovation.
From 1998 onwards, DPCT also started to collaborate with undergraduate courses, with the creation of the current bachelor's and degree courses in Geography, and bachelor's degree in Geology, through the Institute of Geosciences. The Department's participation in subjects that make up the undergraduate curriculum of these courses allows them to offer interdisciplinary training to their students, including research topics carried out within the Department. The DPCT houses different Research Groups (Laboratories) that reflect its strong interdisciplinarity and regional and global reach, offering extension courses in areas specialized and also houses the Brazilian Innovation Magazine (RBI), the main Brazilian scientific journal on topics related to science, technology and innovation.
